Student Debt Erased For Contra Costa College's May 2021 Grads

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — The Contra Costa College Foundation, a support organization for the San Pablo-based community college, followed through on its commitment to aid students during the coronavirus pandemic by erasing outstanding fees owed by the May 2021 graduating class. The foundation's "Finish Line Fund" covered roughly $214 per student for more than 60 soon-to-be grads, ensuring none would be denied diplomas due to money owed the school, officials said. "Imagine the sigh of relief these students are taking right now," CCC Interim President Damon A. Bell said. "The Finish Line Fund is another example of how the foundation is stepping up for our students during this difficult pandemic." Contra Costa College, operating in West Contra Costa County since 1949, offers associate's degrees and certificates, along with vocational training through its Career Technical Education program. The Covid-19 pandemic placed a steep financial burden on its student body, where 85% are low- or middle-low income and 39% are first in their families to go to college, according to school officials. "By erasing this debt for over 60 students, the foundation is empowering students to move forward, whether it's onto their continued educational journeys or meaningful careers," Bell said.
