Description
With all that's going on in the world right now, many people including myself are yearning for an opportunity to give back. Yet even here on the most popular bulletin board, the pickings are pretty slim. To be completely honest, most of them are either quite lame or really far-out for average people.
- chat with some old lonely poet who has posted the same ad for over a year
- feed feral cats
- join studies about vaping, smoking, or some obscure medical condition that hardly anyone has
- lease out your yard for dogs to play (and perform bodily functions) in
- start a super-serious / super-difficult life-changing job like being a sexual abuse counselor
Really? That's it? Even on dedicated sites like volunteermatch.com, the choices are either a) similar to what's on craigslist, or b) something to do with helping homeless people. (Sorry, but I've been harassed and all-out robbed & assaulted by homeless people so many times that I have no desire in helping them out.)
Seems like it's nearly impossible for an average guy to give back. It would be awesome to help with restoration from wildfires, or something else environment-related. Thousands of acres burned to a crisp, yet when you search for an org that needs help planting seedlings, clearing trails, something similar, all you find are forms asking for your credit card number. Either that or they schedule events on obscure weekdays and limit them to 10 people. Anyone who wants to donate time instead of money is out of luck. The closest thing you can find in the Bay Area is some group that gets together one day per month for a couple hours to pick weeds. It's like you need to have special social connections in order to even get the chance to give back to your community in any meaningful way. It's so frustrating!
Anyway, if there is something I'm missing, some other way for a motivated guy with average skills to actually get hands dirty and give back in a meaningful way, please share.
