I have become what I hate...I’ve become...one of you. COVID cases are on the rise again and we are not out of the woods. Not by a long shot. The bottom line is-if you’re STILL supporting not wearing a mask or getting a vaccine, I have no empathy for you. I don’t care if you are sick, poor or alive. I don’t care if you’re family, friend, neighbor or co-worker. I have secretly hoped you’d get sick from Covid just to “teach you a lesson”. The lesson being that your own blind, uneducated and blatant disregard for decency is a reason for you to suffer. In my mind, a small penance for your own stupidity. That’s what I have become. Months ago, I thought you were the problem. Now, I am no better. You can deny it all you want, but this is what our former” leader” has done to this country and its citizens. I fear that in this hostile political environment, I am no longer the only one who feels this way. I say it now, because it’s cathartic. It helps chip away at the pit that’s been lodged in my stomach for months now. While I no longer give a damn about you, somehow I feel better. There’s so much inherently wrong with that statement, but that’s where I am. Trumpers have continued to show their faces. The world is now fully aware of their true colors. They WANT to live like he does, ACT like he does, and SAY the things he says. They’ve been hiding it for their entire lives and now spew the hate and rhetoric freely, because it’s the new norm. He does it, so why can’t I? It’s my right as a citizen, right? No, it’s not. This is not normal. It’s not acceptable. It’s not American. Most importantly, goddamnit, it’s not human. I only shudder at how you secretly felt about women, gays, the handicapped, minorities, or anyone who is different from you for all these years. You’ve kept it bottled up inside and the first real opportunity to pop that cork...well, you didn’t hold back. Your hatred shot out of your body like a cannonball. You couldn’t wait to build that wall, cage those children, abandon the environment, cut healthcare...all to the benefit of your master race, protecting your way of life. Sound familiar? And what is history going to say? It won’t be kind to Trump, his grifting children or his mindless minions. Future generations will ask, “why didn’t my my parents and grandparents take a stand?” Think they won’t be asking? Think again. So I ask, how would I feel as a German living in the Hitler era? Would I have stood up and done the right thing? Would I have taken a stance against him knowing what I know now? When no one is around, ask yourself the same question. If your answer is “yes”, why aren’t you standing now? You gave him a 4-year free pass because he wasn’t a politician, he wasn’t a DC insider. So he was able to lie, cheat, and steal, because well...he was one of us. But, he does not represent us...he might represent you, but he does not represent “us”. Thank God we’ve come to the end of the Trump era and hopefully for good. Now maybe, just maybe, I can find myself again.
