Description

Physical fitness is key for volunteers to be able to respond during an emergency. Physical fitness is vital to personal preparedness. Saturday, May 8th, at 9 am, we'll hike at Griffith Park. During a disaster, such as an earthquake, or a wild fire trapping cars on the Cajon pass, we may find ourselves stranded with no option other than to hike miles to get to safety. Being able to do so while carrying a light to medium load may make the difference between life and death. Our monthly hikes can be challenging to some of our volunteers, even those in good shape, which indicates how much we need these hikes to better our physical conditioning. During these hikes we discuss various disaster preparedness topics and take turns practicing reporting in over the radio. The purpose of these Hiking Assessments Exercises are for each of us to assess our own physical fitness and to know where we need to make improvements in our own lives. Our Staging Area and Command Post will be at The Griffith Park Carousel, near the Ranger Station (4730 Crystal Springs Dr). Our CP should be on the service road as you enter the parking lot. Look for the pop-up tent. This is a perfect time of year to take a hike, not too hot and not too cold. Our hike will take us from the Command Post and follow along, just above the 5 freeway, up to Glendale Peak, down Vista Del Valle and back to the CP on the Bill Eckert Trail. This should be a 5-mile hike. We'll work on communications, teamwork and focus on the Assistant Team Leader position. To promote our program and present a positive image please wear your favorite CERT t-shirt. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes, water, a mask and a desire to accomplish the mission. Please make sure you : have a hydration pack with at least 2 liters of water.have good sturdy hiking boots that have been broken in and are not brand new - these will cause blistersbring snacks: nutrition bars, snackable fruitbring proper attire, temps between 59 and 63 with a 10% chance of rain - light weather resistant jacket recommendbring your FRS radioarrive early and be ready to depart by 9am.For volunteers who want to work on their communication or command post skills, join the Command Post. Per LA City Ordinance and per CDC guidelines, all COVID precautions will be in effect: Everyone will be required to wear a face covering at all times and maintain physical distancing from others. DO NOT COME IF FEEL SICK, DO NOT FEEL WELL, OR HAVE A FEVER! Monitor ACS 1, while driving to Griffith Park and we'll use FRS 5 for the hike.
