Description

Press release from the City of Golden Valley: April 23, 2021 The City will conduct a controlled burn in the Pennsylvania Woods Nature Area in the next few weeks, as conditions allow. Because the burns are wind and weather dependent, burn dates are determined 24 to 48 hours before work begins. Work will be completed by the City's contractor, Landbridge Ecological Corporation. Controlled burns are part of the City's ongoing commitment to water quality and natural resource management. The City established native vegetation buffers around dozens of ponds and wetlands to improve water quality and ecological diversity as well as provide habitat and food sources for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Maintenance of the buffers includes a controlled burn every 3–5 years to promote the growth of native plants and remove invasive species, like buckthorn. View the location map here. What To Expect Burns must be conducted with proper wind conditions to minimize the amount of smoke blowing across roadways or towards buildings. On the day of the burn, the contractor will go door to door to notify property owners immediately adjacent to the burn area. During the operation, residents may see and smell smoke. Therefore, it is recommended to keep windows and doors closed if possible. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation while the City completes this essential work to protect its natural and built infrastructure.
