LABORATORY MAINTENANCE MECHANIC The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for all automation related tasks of the laboratory as well as the overall specimen workflow through the track. In addition, this position is also responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the lab automation track. This role is expected to perform pre-analytical and post-analytical specimen handling. This role is also expected to be knowledgeable of specimen processing instructions and monitor specimen worklists and quality dashboards. The Maintenance Mechanic will be able to recognize issues and problems and address them as appropriate, communicate with vendor and IT team to coordinate repairs and trouble shoot issues as well as assist in the training of others. Responsibilities: • Work with the Laboratory Information Systems Coordinator to ensure smooth track operations and effective troubleshooting • Responsible for sample preparation and handling to include, but not limited to; sample retrieval, centrifugation, aliquoting, add ons, delivery and pick-up to appropriate areas, packaging/manifesting to reference laboratories • Interact with lab automation for specimen input, output, exception handling and specimen disposition (i.e. specimen location, storage and disposal) • Responsible for track maintenance, troubleshooting and repair as well as escalation of concerns (i.e. calling service) • Facilitate communications with supervisors, technologists and lab services regarding track function including taking analyzers offline for maintenance or troubleshooting as needed. Communicate with oncoming shift about track status and any concerns • Knowledge of processing and handling instructions of lab sections and reference laboratories • Monitor specimen worklists and quality dashboard metrics • Responsible for inventory management including monitoring of stock levels. Ensure parts/consumables are well stocked to keep track functioning • Keep a clean and well-organized work area • Conform to all infection control procedures • Report and handle basic facility issues with appropriate departments: electrical, plumbing, safety, etc. • Responsible for training other staff • Effectively communicate with vendor associates from different levels- report issues, clearly define and explain problems, take directives over the phone to troubleshoot and report back status • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned Qualifications: • High School Diploma/GED required; associate degree preferred • Operation of laboratory equipment- centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, incubators, pneumatic tubes system, automated track, etc. required • Knowledge of policies and procedures regarding specimen/requisition acceptability; good laboratory practices, QA/QC concepts and practices • Knowledge of laboratory computer system • Basic operation of computers and office equipment- fax machines, printers, scanners, etc. required • Laboratory equipment for sample tracking, LIS, instrument sample loading, etc. required • Good communicational and organizational skills required The hours are 8:00am – 4:30 pm with alternate weekends.
