PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Park Slope's own Council Member Brad Lander — one of the city's most staunch crusaders for driver accountability — has been caught speeding in schools zones eight times in the past five years, a New York Post report found.
The council member has received a ticket for going more than 10 mph over the speed limit in every borough except Staten Island since June 2016. In all, he's gotten 118 traffic and vehicle violations since 2013, , according to the Post.
The history of reckless driving comes despite the role of the council member, who is now running for city comptroller, as an advocate for the very safety cameras he has been caught by.
Lander was the primary sponsor of a bill last year that would impound the cars of motorists if they are given 15 school-zone speed camera tickets or five red-light camera tickets within a year and fail to take a safety course, the Post noted.
Lander's campaign responded to the report with a prepared statement.
"Brad has been a strong advocate for safe streets including campaigning to expand the school speed zone cameras," spokeswoman Naomi Dann added."Because of that campaign, there are more cameras around and more tickets being issued, which is a good thing for street safety."
He added on Thursday when asked about the report on NY1 that he "should slow down."
