NEW YORK CITY —About 327,000 New York City public school students are signed up for in-person learning, school officials said. Department of Education numbers released Friday are a boost over the 315,000 blended learning students officials had previously claimed. "Last week, we had an average in-person attendance rate of 91.7%!!!" Danielle Filson, a DOE spokesperson, tweeted. "That's A LOT of kiddos!" That's A LOT of kiddos!— Danielle Filson (@DanielleFilson) April 23, 2021 The student numbers indeed are "a lot" but still represent a fraction of New York City's total enrollment, which stands at roughly 1 million.In-person enrollment fell far behind initial expectations — last week, 285,000 students were in classrooms. But the numbers will swell next week when an additional 51,000 students are scheduled to return after parents had their final chance to opt-in their children for the school year. The breakdown of new opt-ins, according to the Department of Education, is: · Grades 3K - 5: 26,500 · Middle School: 10,000 · High School: 13,000 · District 75: 1,500 In-person attendance last week was also up from the 88.8 percent pandemic attendance rate, according to officials. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city plans to return to full in-person learning next school year, which starts in September.
