2 Dead After Watermelon Truck Crashes On NJ Turnpike

MERCER COUNTY, NJ —Two people were killed after a tractor-trailer carrying watermelons crashed on NJ Turnpike in Mercer County on Thursday. The crash occurred around 9:22 p.m., in Robbinsville, north of Exit 7A. The Peterbilt tractor pulling a semi-trailer ran off the road to the right and crashed into the guardrail and concrete bridge support, said New Jersey State Police. The driver of the truck was ejected and suffered fatal injuries, and his male passenger also suffered fatal injuries, said NJSP. The crash resulted in spilled watermelon across the road. CBS3 displayed video of the moment when the truck was being hauled away. As it was being transported, the vehicle split into two, according to the station. The right lane of the northbound inner road was closed for around six hours Thursday night. Lanes reopened Friday morning. The crash is currently under investigation.
