Description

Press release from Plano Independent School District: April 22, 2021 On March 6 at the virtual Region 10N Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), Plano ISD student works of art competed with a total of 1,323 regional juried entries. In a normal year, students have a one-on-one interview with a judge; however, due to this year's COVID-19 restrictions, students articulated their art process and intent in writing. Judges score each work from I to IV, with IV being a superior rating. Works rated IV are considered for the state VASE. 15% of works receiving a IV rating in their division are chosen to move to the state competition which takes place this year on April 23 and 24. Even in this year of challenges, 311 Plano ISD student artists submitted work to the regional VASE and 238 works received regional VASE awards. Of the regional awardees, 27 works will advance to the state VASE competition. Students enter their work in four divisions corresponding to experience level: division 4 - advanced, division 3 - difficult, division 2 - intermediate and division 1 - beginning. 27 Works of Art Chosen for State VASE Competition Division 1 Vanessa Duong, McMillen High School, grade 10, Shipwreck, teacher: Stephenie AndersonFaye Esmeralda, Plano East Senior High, grade 10, Cardboard Portrait Hand on Glasses, teacher: Tiffany Alvarez-ThurmanEesha Gundam, Jasper High School, grade 9, Grocery Store Sushi, teacher: Adriane AndersonKatherine Lee, Jasper High School, grade 9, A Child's Tableau of Paint, teacher: Adriane AndersonAmitha Mandava, Plano East Senior High, grade 9, Pen and Ink Landscape of Desert, teacher: Tiffany Alvarez-ThurmanDominic Park, Jasper High School, grade 9, A Stroll Through, the Market, teacher: Adriane AndersonMelanie Prado, Shepton High School, grade 9, A Marionette's Smile, teacher: Melissa PierceTaarena Rathore, McMillen High School, grade 9, Anticipation, teacher: Lauren LitwinTaarena Rathore, McMillen High School, grade 9, Reminiscing, teacher: Lauren LitwinLily (Linh) Tran, Plano East Senior High, grade 10, Pen & Ink Landscape with Pagoda, teacher: Tiffany Alvarez- Thurman Division 2 Daisy Gan, Shepton High School, grade 10, A Thousand Words, teacher: Melissa PierceAudrey He, Jasper High School, grade 10, In Harmony, teacher: Adriane AndersonGabrielle Hooker, Academy High School, grade 10, The Eerie Passage, teacher: Linda AponteNancy Yan, Jasper High School, grade 10, Life Is Butter with Bread, teacher: Adriane AndersonEvelyn Zhou, Jasper High School, grade 10, Fox in Nature Scene, teacher: Sara StevensSophia Zhou, Jasper High School, grade 10, Figure Holding Flower, teacher: Sara Stevens Division 4 Aditi Buch, Plano Senior High, grade 12, Distorted Portrait in Blue & Orange, teacher: Allison GarrisonAditi Buch, Plano Senior High, grade 12, Still Life Imagined Two Ways, teacher: Allison GarrisonChloe Chan, Plano Senior High, grade 12, Digital Portrait with IV Bags, teacher: Tiffany Alvarez- ThurmanEmily Evans, Plano Senior High, grade 11, Acrylic Painting of a Surreal Date, teacher: Allison GarrisonDeigo Diaz, Plano Senior High, grade 12, Photo of Dad, teacher: Allison GarrisonSaher Kamal, Plano West Senior High, grade 11, Intermingle Poster, teacher: Jeanine GastonAashna Mangal Plano West Senior High, grade 11, Orange and Blue Nonobjective, teacher: Phillip FryeGrace Phan, Plano East Senior High, grade 11, Not Enough, teacher: Ashley BruegelSamyuktha Variyam, Plano Senior High, grade 12, Portrait of a Girl in Pen, teacher: Allison GarrisonDenise Xu, Plano Senior High, grade 11, City in Glass, teacher: Allison GarrisonAnna Zhu, Plano West Senior High, grade 11, 3 Portraits Praying, teacher: Phillip Frye High School Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) Mission The mission of the High School Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) is to recognize exemplary student achievement in the Visual Arts by providing high school art students and programs a standard of excellence in which to achieve.
