BOULDER CREEK, CA — A man was arrested Wednesday after a seven-hour standoff in Boulder Creek, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office announced. Emmanuel Altamirano, 32, was arrested and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on 15 charges, including battery, obstructing an officer and trespassing, jail records show. He remained in jail as of Thursday afternoon. Deputies were called to the 100 block of Brook Lane around 11 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a man armed with what appeared to be a rifle entering a tent-trailer on the property, according to the sheriff's office. The owner said the tent-trailer should have been empty. Altamirano came out and deputies tried to talk to him. He retreated and refused to come out, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies identified Altamirano, who had a felony conviction on his record that prevented him from possessing guns, according to the sheriff's office. The SWAT and crisis negotiation teams were called to the scene. Altamirano exited the trailer around 6:30 p.m. with a machete and refused to drop his weapon, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies fired bean bag rounds at Altamirano to get him to drop the machete so he could be arrested, the sheriff's office said. The bean bag rounds apparently hit an explosive device that was on Altamirano's person, the sheriff's office said. The device detonated and he suffered minor injuries. A BB gun was also found at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. Altamirano was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.
