Press release from the City of Hermosa Beach: April 23, 2021 Hermosa Beach Mayor Justin Massey issued the following statement today regarding the verdicts in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. "The jury's unanimous verdicts that Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd provide a measure of closure to this tragic event and are an important step for our criminal justice system, but much remains to be done to balance the enormous challenges of law enforcement with the enormous challenges of protecting the dignity of every member of the human family. "In Hermosa Beach, we take on that work continuously. The Hermosa Beach Police Department recently earned its fourth accreditation from the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and has a Transparency page on the City website providing easy access to public information, including use of force. We will continue to build a culture of professionalism, transparency and service in the Hermosa Beach Police Department so we are a model of effective and professional law enforcement." The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies' (CALEA's) accreditation is considered the "gold standard" in public safety. Law enforcement's major executive associations created CALEA in 1979 as a credentialing authority, and CALEA says that it accredits "public safety agencies that have demonstrated compliance with CALEA Standards and have been awarded CALEA Accreditation by the Commission."
