TUCSON, AZ — The Pima County Board of Supervisors gave the green light to move forward with an expansion concept at Tucson's Kino Sports Complex on Wednesday. The board reached an agreement with Knott Development of Maryland on a services agreement to refine its architectural, engineering and other analyses for the initial portions of the project. The proposed expansion would include an ice complex housing three sheets of ice, in addition to a multi-sport field house and on-site retail and commercial projects, the county said. The new 86,000-square-foot ice complex, which would be the only ice surface in the area outside of the Tucson Arena, would be able to host competitive hockey, figure skating and other ice sports. The field house would take up 130,000-square-feet of space, housing up to 16 volleyball courts, eight indoor lacrosse fields and other options. The county currently has no indoor sports facilities that have such a capacity. The business plan and development agreement is expected to be completed by July, the county said. The Kino Sports Complex expansion plan also calls for additional entertainment venues, restaurants, retail, a hotel, outdoor plaza, medical office and multi-family housing.
