Position: Permanent Fish Technician Location: Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, Juneau, Alaska Duration: Permanent (year-round) Starting Date: TBA Closing Date: June 15, 2021 or until filled Purpose & Duties: Douglas Island Pink & Chum, Inc. (DIPAC) is a private non-profit aquaculture operator that produces chum, Chinook, coho and sockeye salmon at two facilities in the Juneau area for the common property fisheries of Northern Southeast Alaska. This Permanent Fish Technician is an entry-level position, and the employee works under close supervision of the Hatchery Manager, Assistant Hatchery Manager, or Fish Culturist. S/He assists in a variety of hatchery projects. Technical questions are referred to the supervisor. A person filling this position is expected to develop the knowledge and skills required to make them qualified for applying for advancement to Fish Culturist positions within the DIPAC organization when a vacancy occurs. Duties include, but are not limited to, involvement with all aspects of salmon culture/production including broodstock capture, eggtake, incubation, ponding, transport, rearing, marking, and tagging. Other duties also include, but are not limited to, water quality monitoring, record keeping and supervising seasonal crews. Work duties are performed at the hatchery and other such locations as may be required in the course of hatchery operations. Qualifications: Some level of education or experience in fisheries technology or related field is preferred. Persons must be physically fit and able to push, pull, carry or lift up to 50 pounds up to 100 feet; be able to handle being exposed to inclement weather, cold and dark conditions. Possession of a valid driver’s license with a good driving record is preferred. Compensation: $35,000 to $45,000 DOE.
