PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A new supermarket causing a buzz in Park Slope officially opens on Friday. Urban Market — found between 12th and 13th streets in the former Mandee space — will officially open its doors to the neighborhood with a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., marking what will likely be an exciting kick-off for Park Slopers who have anxiously awaited the supermarket since it started setting up the space last year. "People are calling us, people are walking by and telling us they can't wait," co-owner Danny Hamdan told Patch on Thursday. "Everyone is very excited." The grand opening is particularly exciting for Hamdan's family, who have overcome coronavirus and cancer diagnoses as they prepared to open the store. Hamden and his cousins Mike, Nasari and Mohammad Mujalli started plans for the supermarket about a year ago, he said. "It's a miracle we got this far," he said. "It's been a challenge, but thank God we were able to pull it off." The supermarket, which will be under the Key Food franchise, is the latest venture for the Mujalli family, who have 30 years experience running grocery stores in New York City. The owners are also behind the DUMBO Market on Front Street and a store on Baxter Avenue in Queens. Urban Market will offer a "full-blown supermarket" for the neighborhood, which Hamdan said a market study revealed had a need for more grocery options. The store will include a produce section, deli and seafood counter and, once a liquor license is approved, a walk-in "beer cave," he said. On top of in-person shopping, free home deliveries, online shopping and phone orders for the elderly will be available. Owners also encourage customers to let them know if there's anything else they'd like to add to the selection, Hamdan added. "We're a very customer-friendly store," Hamdan said. "Our number one priority is the customer."
