SANTA CRUZ, CA — The founders of The Cigarette Surfboard will celebrate Earth Day by speaking Thursday evening about their journey to cut down on plastic pollution by making boards out of cigarette butts. Longtime friends Taylor Lane, a San Jose State University graduate, and Ben Judkins, a University of California, Santa Cruz graduate, will speak from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at a virtual event hosted by O'Neill Sea Odyssey, The Santa Cruz County Office of Education's Tobacco Use Prevention Education Program and The Santa Cruz County Tobacco Education Coalition. Lane and Judkins create surfboards made of tens of thousands of cigarette butts. They have worked with musician Jack Johnson and surfer Cliff Kapono as they seek to raise awareness about the tobacco industry's impact on the marine environment, organizers said.
