TRIBECA, NY — The New York Police Department is looking for a man who passed by an Asian woman in Lower Manhattan, made racist remarks, and physically threatened her in multiple ways. At 9:30 a.m. on April 1, near the corner of Desbrosses Street and Hudson Street, a man passed by a 47-year-old woman, made anti-Asian remarks, and motioned to her with a raised, closed fist, while posturing at the woman in an aggressive stance, according to police. The specific street is technically just in Tribeca, but also near the border of SoHo and the West Village. The woman took a defensive position, and the man fled south along Hudson Street, police said. The incident is being investigated by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force, and police released pictures Thursday of the man wanted in connection to what happened on the Lower Manhattan corner. New York Police Department In the first week of April, the NYPD reported there were 31 hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in March 2021, averaging out to one per day, and compared to zero hate crimes that targeted Asian New Yorkers in March 2020.
