Press release from the Syracuse City School District: A Message from the Syracuse City School District April 20, 2021 Dear Syracuse City School District Families, This afternoon, the jury reached a verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd. While our country is still grappling with racism, inequality and social injustice, we are hopeful that this verdict will help us begin the process of healing. The Syracuse City School District is committed to establishing and sustaining an equitable community that achieves the district's equity mission to end the predictive value of race and ensure each individual student's and staff's success. The Board of Education and the District reject all forms of racism as destructive to our mission, vision, values, goals and practices. We remain committed to providing an environment where our students and staff feel safe, valued and heard. Our school community must share the collective responsibility to address, eliminate, and prevent actions, decisions, and outcomes that result from and perpetuate racism. Sincerely, Jaime Alicea, Superintendent of Schools This press release was produced by the Syracuse City School District. The views expressed are the author's own.
