Join us for a candlelight vigil in support of the courageous Falun Gong practitioners in China and Hong Kong facing suppression. On April 25, 1999, more than 10,000 ordinary Chinese citizens gathered near the Chinese Appeal Bureau in Beijing in appeal of the unjust arrest of their fellow Falun Gong (a traditional Chinese spiritual and meditation practice) practitioners. This event marked the largest peaceful petition in the past few decades in China. Despite the peaceful resolution of the matter which was widely praised by western media on that day, the then-Chinese communist party (CCP) leader Jiang Zemin launched a national campaign against Falun Gong later that year. Jiang was paranoid and jealous of the widespread popularity of this Buddha school practice of Falun Gong. The persecution rapidly evolved into the largest religious persecution and human rights disaster in China's modern history. Today we gather in this candlelight vigil to remember those courageous souls who have given their lives in the peaceful resistance of this persecution in the past 22 years.
