Description

Come out to our community walk and learn more about how Charlotte’s diminishing tree canopy cover has an adverse impact on our community! Have you ever noticed that it is extremely hot in your house in the summertime? Do you dread having to crank up the air condition to mitigate the indoor temperature of your house in the summertime? Historic West End residents are less likely to walk under tree canopy in a quarter mile than Dilworth residents. Across the nation there is a pattern that indicates black residents are concentrated in hotter areas of town due to the lack of trees while white residents are concentrated in cooler areas. Charlotte’s diminishing tree canopy is centered in black communities and redlining is also linked to diminishing tree canopy cover. This leaves the neighborhoods much warmer and increases the cost of utility. Furthermore, trees in Historic West End are in much worse condition to those in Dilworth. Instead of being a vehicle to foster a positive home environment, they are a hazard with a dull impact on the community. Homeowner’s insurance is more of a liability for residents than it is a luxury because of the financial burden. Many residents do not know what to do in order to get care for trees in their yard. The QC Family Tree Tuck Bound Stakeholder Collective believes that having healthy trees that are well maintained is essential to great communities. That is why we are shedding awareness on the need for the CLTCC to fund programs to help keep trees healthy in our communities. Come out to our community walk and learn more about how Charlotte’s diminishing tree canopy cover has an adverse impact on our community.
