Pay range $17-$25 DOE. Benefits include PTO, sick leave, along with contributions to health care costs and retirement savings. Performance evaluations for wage increases are conducted at 90 days and subsequently every 6 months. Schedule: 32-40 hours per week Duration: Desired minimum two-year commitment Nursery Description The Watershed Nursery has been providing quality native plant material to local Bay Area restoration projects since 2001. The mission of The Watershed Nursery is to provide exceptional native plants and services for habitat enhancement projects throughout the San Francisco Bay/Delta Watershed. We make the success of habitat restoration and enhancement projects our highest priority. We are committed to providing dependable service and quality site-specific gene-stock. The measure of our success extends beyond the high quality plant material that leaves the nursery, to the establishment of diverse, healthy, functioning ecosystems. Services provided by The Watershed Nursery include customized seed collection, customized plant growing, species palette creation, project planting design, and project monitoring. Our protocol is for seed collection to be conducted within project watershed from plants growing in similar habitat conditions to restoration project site or from closest watershed with similar environmental conditions. The Watershed Nursery is committed to contributing to habitat value here in the Bay Area. Therefore, we collect seeds only from established populations rather than from solitary plants, from various populations in the range specified for the project, and, ideally, multiple times throughout fruiting cycle. The Watershed Nursery also provides customized plant growing, using standard horticultural practices adapted for native species, the latest phytosanitary Best Management Practices, and restoration planting specifics. In addition, The Watershed Nursery develops species lists and planting plans for projects based on reference site visits, database research, herbarium samples and recorded observations. Job Description The Nursery Site Manager position has 3 main responsibilities. Within nursery operations this person maintains and optimizes the operational systems set in place for ideal nursery functioning. This includes irrigation optimization, media and container processing, and general site operations including site upkeep and varied construction activities. Within IPM this position is also responsible for the weekly mortality culling, IPM scouting, reporting, and pest management. Finally, pertaining to best management practices this position is responsible for the maintenance of activities related to our phytosanitary BMPs. As with all positions at the nursery this position may be called upon to contribute to other production or project needs. Duties will include but are not limited to the following items: • Identify and address any general infrastructure needs, ie. greenhouse, fencing, tables, weed cloth, gravel. • Scout for pest issues and apply IPM methods for control (Department of Pesticide Regulation training to be completed within 3-months of hire date). • Cull, track, log and report plant mortality. • Manage container sterilizing and organization. • Manage receipt of soil deliveries, heat-treatment of all media, and general BMP compliance. • Conduct testing for Phytophthora spp. using pear bait leachate method. • Design, build, and maintain irrigation systems. • Assist with plant deliveries. • Support propagation crew. Required Skills • Ability to work independently or on a team. • Ability to detect problems and propose potential solutions. • Ability to manage tasks efficiently and effectively. • Ability to follow instructions and ask questions. • Have a strong interest in working with California native plants. • Be comfortable with physically strenuous work and operating power equipment. • Must be physically fit and able to stoop, bend and repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs. • Willingness to apply pesticides. • Willingness to work in inclement weather. • Ability to maintain detailed records. • Some Spanish speaking ability.
