NEWPORT, RI — Parking season is fast approaching in Newport. Starting May 1, fees will be charged at all meters and pay & display machines in the city. Newport's parking season runs from May 1 to Oct. 31, with metered parking in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., including weekends and holidays. Parking machines have accepted both coins or credit cards for several years now, but starting this year, parking fees can be paid through the city's new Passport Parking app. Find the link to download on the city's website or by searching "Passport App" on the app store. Once downloaded, users will be asked to create an account, enter the parking zone number from posted signs and enter the license plate of the vehicle. From there, users can see their parking history, and extend their parking session from their phone, if needed. The Residential Parking Program also goes into effect May 1 and runs through Oct. 1. In designated areas, parking is only allowed for vehicles with a residential permit, visitor pass or a temporary residential permit. Residents cannot park for free at metered spots, even with a sticker. Residents can get a sticker by calling the Collections Office at 401-845-5401 or by downloading an application online. Metered parking rates for the 2021 season will be the same as last year: $1.25 per hour, except for Memorial Boulevard at Easton's Beach, which costs $2 per hour. The Gateway Visitor's Center lot costs $2 for the first half-hour, then $1.50 for each 30 minutes after that, with weekly and monthly rates available. The Mary Street lot, which operates 24 hours, is a self-pay and display lot. Rates cost $3 per hour and $20 per day. Pay via app or at pay stations in the center of the lot, next to the restrooms.
