ELMHURST, IL — Another apartment complex is being planned for Elmhurst, taking the place of a longtime media business. Last week, Minneapolis-based Ryan Companies said in a letter to nearby residents that it was planning a complex at the northwest corner of First Street and Haven Road. The complex would consist of 204 multi-family units and 322 structured parking stalls. City officials say such high rises have improved Elmhurst's economy, but many residents oppose such development downtown. Ryan Companies plans an open house to discuss with residents its plans for the complex from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. May 5 at Elmhurst City Hall, 209 N. York St. Currently, a longtime business, Maher Publications, is on the land in question. The business publishes DownBeat magazine, which is described as a consumer magazine covering jazz and blues. It also puts out Music Inc., a business publication. A person answering Maher Publications' phone Wednesday confirmed the apartment complex is being planned for the property. A message was left with Maher Publications owner Kevin Maher. Toby Veit, Ryan Companies' vice president of real estate development, couldn't be reached for immediate comment. He signed the letter to residents, which was dated last Thursday. The project must still get approval through the city's zoning process. In his "State of the City" address in January, Mayor Steve Morley talked about the importance of multi-family housing in downtown Elmhurst. "We made an effort to include transit-oriented developments in our town because we felt that was where the future was, especially in our downtown," Morley said. "For our shops to survive in this world, they need density, and we also had a lack of housing for young couples and empty nesters." The housing projects in recent years, he said, address these issues. "We continue to benefit from transit-oriented development," he said. "We also have a vibrant downtown that keeps our mom-and-pop boutique shops open." For more information on the Ryan Companies' plans, call the firm at 630-328-1107.
