Press release from Mentor Public Library : April 21, 2021 Our resident historian Dr. John Foster will discuss the first Indochina War in Vietnam during a free online talk at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6. The talk is part of a year-long lecture series on The Vietnam Wars. This program traces the conflict from 1945 to 1954 when the French government sought to reimpose colonial rule in Vietnam. However, they met fierce resistance from homegrown anticolonial forces calling themselves the Viet Minh. The lecture is free to attend and will be hosted online via Zoom. Registration is required to get the Zoom link. You can sign up online or call us at (440) 255-8811 ext. 247. The first lecture in Foster's series – which was on the long history of European colonialism in Vietnam – can be watched in its entirety online on our website. In addition to being a reference librarian, Foster has a doctorate degree in history. He has taught history at both high school and college levels. Previously, he has led series on the Battles of World War II, the Cold War, the American Revolution and US Presidents of the 20th Century at the library.
