Press release from the City of Berkeley:
April 21, 2021
Press Contact: Byron White, Public Information Officer, (510) 981-5780
Berkeley, California (Wednesday, April 21, 2021) - While the jury in the Chauvin trial returned a finding of guilty on all charges, we understand there are still very real and deep emotions for many members of our community, and there is still much work to be done to re-instill confidence and trust in our criminal justice system. The Berkeley Police Department is committed to a meaningful partnership with our community to identify and address racial disparities and advance law enforcement practices as a whole. BPD officers regularly engage with community members, various merchant associations and neighborhood groups. The contacts we have with our community everyday are meaningful opportunities for us to connect. Members of our department are actively working with the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force as our City undertakes this very important work.
The Berkeley Police Department will continue to protect and serve our community, including supporting and facilitating the peaceful expression of First Amendment rights. Now more than ever is a time for our community to come together, share open dialogue and really hear each other.
With respect,
Jen Louis
Interim Chief of Police
Berkeley Police Department
