TEMPE, AZ — Tempe Mayor Corey Woods is joining a list of Arizona mayors in celebrating Earth Day AZ, a collaboration celebrating ways that Arizona's cities can become more sustainable in the future. Woods joins mayors from El Mirage, Flagstaff, Fountain Hills, Mesa, Oro Valley, Peoria, Phoenix, Sedona and Tucson in the project. The movement, which is in partnership with Arizona State University's Sustainable Cities Network, aims to show the public that we all have a role to play in ensuring the planet's health going forward, the city said. "Celebrating this day is so important," Woods said. "It is proof that we can make a positive global impact when we work together locally. It is also a great way to highlight the work we do year-round to make an impact on reducing carbon emissions." Earth Day has been celebrated in America each year since 1970, with the collective of mayors asking that the public adopt sustainable practices, such as: Not leaving water running when in useCarpooling or using public transportation when possibleUsing reusable water bottles and coffee mugsTaking reusable shopping bags to the grocery storeRising out food cans before placing them in a recycling binPutting all junk mail and magazines in recycling, not trashUsing energy-efficient LED bulbsBuying recycled paper for your home and office For more information on the Earth Day AZ collective and for tips on how to be more eco-friendly, visit the project's website.
