Description
"To say that the Civil Rights Era began in the 60's is not only misleading but false."
Mostly true. In the 1760's the Loyalists were true conservatives, who pledged allegiance to King George III and the British Parliament. The Patriates were true liberals, believing in an earth shaking theory we could break away and form an independent, new government of our own making. The Patriots who are the true heroes in the war of independence later became the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln who certainly was not the first abolitionist, but the first president to become one. Just to end wrangling in other posts: Washington (a Patriate) called the party the "Federalists," whom Jefferson later changed to "Republican."
Political Parties grow and mutate and by 1960 both political parties were deeply racist, but the Democratic Party began evolving when radically, a white cracker, former Dixiecrat from Texas became inadvertently President and began change of life for African American citizens forever. He was Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson. This so slapped in the face of his southern Dixiecrats, they ran to the outstretched arms of the Republican Party, where they remain to this day.
