Stoughton Take Steps Towards New South Elementary School

STOUGHTON, MA — Stoughton took a major step towards potentially building a new South Elementary School. The Massachusetts School Building Authority invited Stoughton Public Schools into its eligibility phase that could bring a new elementary school to the southern area of town. This phase doesn't guarantee state officials will provide a grant for a new school, but Stoughton was one of just 15 school districts invited into the program this year, Superintendent John Marcus said. "The aging South Elementary School has been at the top of Stoughton's priority list for several years," Marcus said in a statement. "With significant accessibility, water infiltration and mechanical issues, and small rooms that do''t meet the needs of our many, varied learners, the South building can no longer provide the services our students and staff deserve." During the eligibility phase, school officials will be tasked with preparing for a feasibility study. Marcus said the study will examine Stoughton's educational and space needs, along with available potential locations for a new school. If Stoughton gets state funding for a new elementary school, it will be the second new building for the district since 2019, when the new Stoughton High School opened.
