SALEM, MA — Principals from Boston, Malden and Haverhill schools are the three finalists to be the next Salem High School principal. The district's search to replace Samantha Meier, who said in March she was resigning effective at school year's end for family reasons, will include a series of school visits and interviews with students, faculty and staff next week. A virtual public forum will be held with each candidate following his respective visit. Salem Superintendent Steve Zrike said there were 19 applicants to the screening team that was narrowed to four finalists through evaluation and interviews. One finalist opted out — making Haverhill High principal Glenn Burns, McCormack Middle School of Boston principal Elvis Henriquez and Malden High principal Chris Mastrangelo the three to proceed to next week's interviews. "This is an exciting time for Salem High School," Zrike said. "We look forward to getting to know these talented individuals in the coming weeks. We are grateful for your participation in the process and for your support as we identify the new leader for Salem High School." Burns has been the principal at Haverhill High for three years and was principal at Collins Middle School in Salem from 2014 to 2018. He was also a history teacher, redesign coach and assistant principal at Fall River Public Schools. He is a Bridgewater State University alumnus with a Master of Education in Leadership at Providence College. Henriquez was a teacher in Boston before becoming the principal at John W. McCormack Middle School in Boston. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master's degrees at the Boston College Lynch School of Education and is a doctoral candidate at George Washington University. Mastrangelo has been the Malden High principal for the past three years and was the Boyle House principal at Malden High for eight years. A Springfield College alumnus, he was a teacher in Wakefield for 12 years and coached the Peabody High boys basketball team. Following school visits next week, Burns will have a public forum with parents and stakeholders on Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m. with a link included here. Mastrangelo will have his public forum on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. with a link included here. Henriquez will have his public forum on Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m with a link included here.
