SALEM, MA — The Salem Arts Festival Mural Slam is back this spring. Salem's Public Art Commission and the Salem Arts Festival are bringing back the downtown live painting event for the sixth year on June 5 and 6. Artists are invited "to contribute to downtown Salem's reputation as a destination for world-class, inspiring and engaging public art." The Salem Arts Festival is a project of Salem Main Streets and Creative Collective. The Mural Slam will be held on Artists' Row on New Derby Street. The live painting exhibition will be subject to state coronavirus regulations. In the event painting cannot be done in person, the city will allow more distanced private or small public exhibitions. The deadline for applications is May 14 with those chosen set to be informed of their selection on May 20. Interested artists can apply here. Each chosen artist will receive a $400 stipend. Students are encouraged to apply. All are eligible, but preference is given to local residents who have not participated in the Slam before. Painting will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Jule 5. Canvases are 8 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Murals will hang in Artists' Row for up to a year when they can then be claimed by the artist. Murals must be "family-friendly." Anyone with questions can contact [email protected].
