Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville on COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters, Pauses, and More News Because the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a new virus into the world that behaves differently than any other scientists have seen, news frequently changes on variants of the virus as well as the vaccines that were created in record time to protect billions of people and help put an end to this worldwide pandemic. Recent news includes a recommended pause in one vaccine, an increase in a variant, and whether we will need booster shots in the future. Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville has a quick look at all these stories to keep you up to date. FDA Recommending Pause in Johnson & Johnson Vaccine The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are reviewing six cases (among the 6.8 million Johnson & Johnson vaccines administered) where women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed a serious type of blood clot within three weeks of receiving the vaccine, killing one of the women. While this data is being reviewed, the FDA is recommending that this particular vaccine be paused. Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House chief advisor, said that he believes the pause will be a matter of days or weeks, not weeks or months. Fauci: Boosters May Be Needed in a Year Given that it's been less than a year since Pfizer and Moderna began administering COVID-19 vaccines, they do not know if they will be effective for that period of time or longer. Data suggests that antibody levels in those vaccinated remain strong after six months, so experts are hopeful that immunity will be strong for a least two or three years. Just in case, however, both drug companies are developing what would be a third shot for those who have received the first two. "If it turns out to last a year or a year and a half, we very well may need to get booster shots to keep up the level of protection," Fauci said on April 5. Variants Spreading in the U.S. and Elsewhere A variant of COVID-19 first discovered in England is wreaking havoc in parts of the United States (including Michigan), while a different variant is causing hospital-capacity issues in Brazil. It appears that the available vaccines provide enough protection from these variants to prevent severe disease, but the risk still exists that it could spread quickly and cause another wave in the U.S. That's why the race to vaccinate enough people to stop the spread is so critical.
