TOWN OF ISLIP, NY — The Town of Islip is looking for feedback from the community regarding the recent New York State marijuana legislation. Earlier this month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, which made New York the 15th state in the country to legalize the drug for recreational use. However, the new law allows for individual municipalities to opt out of selling marijuana. After the news broke, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer called a meeting with all Long Island officials with the belief that local communities should ban sales. During the meeting, local officials seemed split on the topic of allowing the sale of weed, and no decision on the topic was made. Town of Islip supervisor Angie Carpenter stated during the meeting she needed more information before coming to a consensus. Now, the town is asking residents to share their opinion on whether or not marijuana sales should be allowed. "This is a polarizing topic, with many passionate people coming down on both sides of the issue," Carpenter said. "I invite all members of our community to take advantage of this opportunity and let us know your thoughts." Residents can share their opinions on the recent NYS Legislation by emailing their thoughts to [email protected].
