WESTPORT, CT — Westport Public Schools is dealing with a spike in coronavirus cases this week, as more than a dozen students and/or staffers have been infected, according to the district's COVID-19 dashboard.
Thirteen students and/or staffers are listed on the dashboard, as of Monday, as having "positive confirmed cases," and those individuals are isolating. As a result, 99 people are in quarantine.
The Westport Local Press reported that the district had 15 new cases, nine of which were at Staples High School, based on a message from Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice to parents.
Patch reached out to Scarice for comment, but did not receive a reply.
According to the state Department of Public Health's preliminary data, Westport recorded 36 new coronavirus cases between April 7 and 14, bringing the total number of cases in town to 1,738 since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
As of April 15, Westport's risk level for the coronavirus was considered "moderate" with an average of 18.5 cases per 100,000 people, according to the school district.
