No Fatal Crashes On I-95 In Virginia During Safety Initiative

VIRGINIA — No traffic crash fatalities happened along Virginia's entire 178 miles of Interstate 95 during the "I-95 Drive to Save Lives" safety initiative, the Virginia State Police said Friday. Virginia was among 15 states, from Maine to Florida, to participate in the annual safety initiative April 9-10. The state police increased patrols during the two-day initiative. In total, during the two-day initiative, Virginia State Police cited 194 speeders and 11 people for failing to wear a seatbelt. In addition, 20 drivers were cited for violating Virginia's new hands-free law. There were also two drug arrests made and three wanted persons were arrested, the state police said. This year the initiative coincided with Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Funds generated from summonses issued by Virginia State Police go directly to court fees and the state's Literary Fund, which benefits public school construction, technology funding and teacher retirement.
