Description

Come learn beekeeping basics, bees' activity in spring and summer, and how to keep a mid-season colony healthy in this IN PERSON workshop! Whether you're already keeping bees or simply curious about what beekeeping involves, there will be something for you in this IN PERSON workshop! We'll cover some basics on bees, the progress of them through spring and summer, and what to expect as colonies expand in the warmer, longer days. There will be an observation hive so you can see live bees in action, and our expert beekeepers will show you active hives from a safe distance. The class is designed for beginners so no prerequisite knowledge is required. You will be able to view bees in an observation hive during class. Workshop enrollment is limited to ten people to comply with City COVID19 guidelines and provide a safe experience. You are required to wear a mask for the duration of the workshop and maintain six feet of physical distance from other participants who are not part of your household. Instructors: Paul Koski's interest in honeybees, and insects in general, began as a graduate student when he studied entomology at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley. He taught high school biology and science classes in San Francisco for many years. After retiring in 2008 he was able to spend more time with honeybees and beekeeping. Paul has tended honeybee hives in San Francisco for more than 20 years and has taught many beekeeping classes for the Garden for the Environment, San Francisco Beekeepers Association, community gardens, and other groups. Marc Johnson and Pilar Leano completed GFE's Get Up! program in 2010 and have volunteered at the garden since. They first put hives at GFE in early 2015 and manage about a dozen hives, mostly in Western San Francisco. Marc is on the board of the SF Beekeepers Association and both volunteer time and effort to promote urban beekeeping. NOTE: Your well-being while at GFE at this time is of paramount concern. Due to COVID19 guidelines mandated by the city of San Francisco and the state of California, all participants are required to wear a mask (not supplied by GFE) and maintain a six-foot physical distance from all other participants, including course instructors and GFE staff. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver upon arrival. If you are unwilling or unable to adhere to the above guidelines, or develop COVID19 symptoms on or before the day of the workshop (fever, chills, repeated shaking / shivering, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, feeling unusually weak or fatigued, new loss of taste or smell, muscle pain, headache, runny or congested nose, or diarrhea), please do not sign up, or cancel your registration if needed. GFE reserves the right to deny class participation if any of the above guidelines are not followed. No walk-up registration permitted for this course.
