AUSTIN, TX — Over the past decade, Austin has seen an influx of new residents coming from out-of-state and across the state to make the metro area their new home. As a result, the city has become one of the most attractive Texas cities for out-of-state renters, according to a recent mobility report by StorageCafe, a nationwide self-storage search website. The website reported Austin received the nation's 11th largest number of renter applications in 2020. The mobility report zoomed in on approximately 1.7 million renter applications nationwide to search for renter migration patterns. The report states about about 40% of renters who relocated to Austin in 2020 came from a different state. The out-of-state city ranking first for renters in the Texas capitol came from New York City. Columbus, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco were also in the top 5. The report states about about 40% of renters who relocated to Austin in 2020 came from a different state. (Media handout by StorageCafe) The primary same-state sources of Austin newcomers are in Round Rock, Houston and San Antonio, according to the report. 52 percent of new tenants applied for more spacious home favoring the East Riverside, Oltorf, Northwest and Far North areas of the city. Millennials made up the bulk of those intent on moving to the Austin metro area at around 54 percent and Gen Zers ranked second at 20 percent. One of Austin's strongest points in attracting new residents is the growing job market. Unemployment in the city dropped from 12.5 percent in April 2020 to 4.9 percent in December 2020, the report states.
