NEW MILFORD, NJ — Some good news for concerned residents of New Milford: In a recently published report, the town came in 15th place among the safest cities in New Jersey.
SafeWise, a security product review platform, ranked more than 50 cities in 2021 using recent crime statistics and data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. SafeWise also included demographic information and the results of its State of Safety research study.
Also in Bergen county, River Vale Township ranked number one on the list. Dumont came in right before New Milford, at number 14.
With a population of around 16,506 here are some of the statistics for New Milford:
Median Income - $75,071Violent Crime Rate per 1,000 people in 2021, 2020, 2019 - 0.1, 0.3, 0.1Property Crime Rate per 1,000 people in 2021, 2020, 2019 - 3.9, 3.1, 4.4 SafeWise also conducted a survey of New Jersey residents to gauge their perceptions. A total of 58% of participants expressed daily levels of high concern for their safety — a significant increase from 44% last year.
However overall statewide crime rates remained almost the same as the previous year's, with a slight a very slight improvement.
Not all cities made the list because the city was below the population threshold or didn't submit a complete crime report to the FBI in 2019.
The rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and to inspire municipalities to talk about how they can make cities safer, according to the SafeWise website. See the full report here.
