From the South Bend Community School Corporation: April 15, 2021 South Bend Community School Corporation teacher Rose Calhoun has been selected as an Armstrong Teacher Educator by Indiana University, Bloomington. The Armstrong Teacher Educator award is granted to 12 recipients in Indiana each year. Calhoun will work with IU faculty and undergraduate students in developing their teaching practice. Calhoun, who teaches biology, environmental science, and health and wellness, has been with the district since 2010 at Clay High School. Created in 1997, this award has been funded through the generosity of the Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong Fund and the Cook Group companies. In addition to financial support and the opportunity to work with IU faculty and undergraduate students, Armstrong Teacher Educators receive reimbursement for travel and lodging expenses when visiting the Bloomington campus, funding to pay for a substitute teacher while away from the classroom, and a $500 honorarium for their participation in fall semester discussion panels at IU. "Ms. Calhoun has been an exceptional part of our faculty here at Clay," said Principal Christopher Berg. "Her selection as an Armstrong Teacher Educator is befitting, given her love of science education and continuous learning. I'm pleased that this opportunity will not only enhance her professional life, but will, in turn, be of lasting benefit to our students and the education profession as a whole."
