WOONSOCKET, RI — The U.S. has reached what health officials have called a "complicated stage" of the COVID-19 pandemic, with cases and hospitalizations increasing in some parts of the country despite the quickening pace of vaccination. Nationally, the seven-day average of new cases, which had fallen steadily from its peak of nearly 250,000 in January, is rising again, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Over the week ending April 14, new cases averaged 69,577 — 8.1 percent higher than during the previous week, when the seven-day average stood at 64,340. More than 31.2 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported since the pandemic began. The rising caseload — possibly owing to new variants of the virus — has renewed pressure on hospitals and their staffs, although the effects are unevenly distributed nationwide. A New York Times map shows hotspots in rural Oregon, the Texas Panhandle, South Florida, Minnesota, parts of the Northeast, and above all in Michigan. These trends emerge in data compiled by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which has been tracking the effect of COVID-19 on hospital capacity since early in the pandemic. The new numbers for hospitals in Providence County, included below, are current through Thursday, April 15, and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week. Health experts have said that the share of a hospital's total beds devoted to coronavirus cases is key to understanding the strain on its resources. A share greater than 10 percent is said to be a cause of concern. When that share exceeds 20 percent, a hospital is said to be under extreme stress; and as the share approaches 50 percent, the stress is said to be immense. Also this week, state health officials in Rhode Island reported to the federal government that approximately 92 percent of inpatient beds and 82 percent of ICU beds in hospitals across the state were still occupied as of April 17. Around 8 percent of beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported. Below are the latest figures for hospitals in Providence County. Can't find the hospital you're looking for?
