Cranston's COVID-19 Vaccination Rate Lower Than State Average

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island is about five months into its coronavirus vaccination effort, and is on track to open eligibility to all residents aged 16 and older on Monday. To date, more than 316,000 Rhode Islanders are fully vaccinated. Each week, the Rhode Island Department of Health breaks down the number of fully vaccinated people within each of the state's 39 cities and towns, as well as the vaccination rate per 100,000 people. Statewide, Rhode Island residents are fully vaccinated at a rate of 3,860 per 100,000 people, which works out to about 31 percent of the state's population to date, Gov. Dan McKee said Thursday. Cranston was slightly lower than the state average, with 3,012 fully vaccinated residents. That works out to 3,710 per 100,000 people. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the department's director, has emphasized the need for equity in the state's response. As part of that effort, vaccine eligibility was broadened to residents of certain zip codes hardest-hit by the pandemic, including Woonsocket, parts of Providence, North Providence, Cranston and more. The latest data from the department shows that residents of New Shoreham on Block Island are the most vaccinated, per capita in the state. Although just 46 people were reported to be fully vaccinated, that works out to a rate of 5,562 per 100,000 people. At the other end of the spectrum is Central Falls, which only had 273 fully vaccinated residents, or a rate of 1,409 per 100,000 people in the densely populated city.
