WINCHESTER, CA — A fire that broke out Monday on a hillside east of Highway 79 in Winchester burned just over an acre before crews stopped it. The non-injury blaze was reported at 5:10 p.m. in the area of California Avenue and Stowe Road, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning upslope in light winds, not threatening any homes or other structures. A Cal Fire air tanker and water-dropping helicopter based at nearby Hemet-Ryan Airport made several runs on the brusher, halting its forward rate of spread within 15 minutes. At 5:40 p.m., the blaze was declared 100% contained, according to reports from the scene. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
