Jeffrey S. McCauley, of Pittsburgh, was recently named director of trail development of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail Alliance. With McCauley's guidance, the 9/11 National Memorial Trail development will continue to progress throughout the six states, of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, DC. McCauley was also recently involved in an extensive trail restoration in Garrett, Pennsylvania in Somerset County, which is part of the 9/11 Trail. The 9/11 National Memorial Trail is a 1,300-mile biking, hiking and motor-friendly trail that connects the three 9/11 memorial sites in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, New York City and the Pentagon. McCauley's passion for nature and trails was cultivated during his graduate work at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he earned his master's degree in environmental science and management. Since then, he has been an influential trail manager for many stewardship and volunteer projects in the Pittsburgh area, while working for Friends of the Riverfront and Hollow Oak Land Trust. McCauley's passions include volunteer work, and outdoor recreation such as biking and hiking. An active volunteer, McCauley served in the Maryland Conservation Corps for the Maryland Park Service, after finishing his bachelor's degree in environmental science at Bridgewater College of Bridgewater, Va. "Our environment and nature can impact people for years to come, and I've always felt a passion to preserve and conserve our natural resources," said Jeffrey S. McCauley, trail development director of the Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance. "I'm honored to be able to use my skills and passion to continue to develop the 9/11 Trail, as it's a Trail of such national significance and memorial to those heroes of that tragic day," said McCauley. "We're thrilled to have Jeff join our mission of providing a 1,300 mile memorial trail that will forever commemorate the lives lost on Sept.11," said Thomas Baxter, IV, president of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance. "Jeff's keen eye for detail and extensive knowledge of trails, routes and natural resources will help us maximize our efforts and progress of the Trail for years to come," said Baxter. Although the 9/11 National Memorial Trail 'hiking' portion of the route is not fully completed, the 1,300-mile, 9/11 National Memorial Trail is currently connected by off-road and multi-use trails, making it available for the public to complete the entire 1,300-mile route. The not-for-profit 9/11 National Memorial Trail Alliance relies on financial support from donors and grants to further develop and maintain the 9/11 National Memorial Trail. The Sept. 11 National Memorial Trail designation is now in the legislative process, introduced by U.S. Reps. Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Don Beyer (D-VA). The legislation process will lead the way for the Secretary of Interior to be able to authorize the designation as a national tour route that links the three 9/11 national memorials in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, New York City and in Arlington, Virginia.
