Deputies Cracking Down On Impaired Drivers On 4/20

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is cracking down on impaired drivers April 20, more commonly known as 4/20, which is considered a "holiday" among marijuana users. Deputies will be conducting increased patrols from 2:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. across the county. Although the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana is legal in California, the sheriff's department reminded motorists it is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana. Studies have shown that THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, can "slow reaction times and make it more difficult for drivers to judge distances and keep a steady position in their lane," according to the department. "Driving under the influence doesn't always mean alcohol," Sheriff Bill Gore said. "Any substance that impairs, including marijuana, makes it unsafe to drive." The department urged people who participate in 4/20 activities and consume marijuana to designate a sober driver or stay at home.
