EVERGREEN PARK, IL — All Evergreen Park police officers have been in and will maintain a high presence in the area of the village's shopping districts along 95th Street and Western Avenue in preparation for Derek Chavin verdict, which will be read in moments in a Minneapolis courtroom, police said. Chavin has been on trial for the death of George Floyd, a Black man whose horrific death was captured on viral video from police bodycams and bystanders as the white police officer kept his knee on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes, according to trial testimony. >>> Livestream: Derek Chauvin Trial Verdict Announcement Last summer, in the unrest following George Floyd's death, Evergreen Park Marketplace and the Evergreen Plaza were closed and barricaded with dump trucks and snow plows blocking the entrances. Similar precautions were taken at the Chicago Ridge Mall, as well as shopping centers up and down Cicero Avenue in Burbank. "We are preparing," Mayor Jim Sexton said. "Whatever services may be needed, trucks will move in."
