ELMHURST, IL — Residents and school administrators wanted Elmhurst to consider more controls at the intersection of Hillside and Crescent avenues to prevent crashes. Yield signs are at Crescent. Two years ago, Ward 5 Alderwoman Tina Park asked the city to conduct an investigation of the intersection. Her fellow Ward 5 alderman, Scott Levin, signed on to the request. "This winter, a car-totaling accident resulted from a failure to yield in this intersection just minutes before Lincoln Elementary dismissed students for the day," Park wrote in a May 2019 memo. "A few years prior, another major accident occurred for the same reason within 20 to 30 minutes after students' dismissal." She said that as alderwoman, she has received many complaints of drivers failing to yield, which resulted in near misses. She said she had experienced the danger herself. She asked the city to consider additional or different traffic control signage to improve safety. In a report this month, the city looked into the crash history. In February 2015 and January 2019, eastbound drivers on Crescent did not yield, striking other cars. In its report, the city noted that the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices suggests yield or stop signs be considered when five or more accidents happen in three years or less or when three accidents occur in two years or less. The Paul Box Report recommends such measures when four or more accidents occur in three years or less or when two or more accidents happen in a year or less. The accident history, the city said, does not warrant for more controls at the intersection. City engineering staff evaluated the intersection's sight lines and found them to be adequate, the report said.
