ELMHURST, IL — Scott Levin, who won the Elmhurst mayoral race nearly two weeks ago, spent the most money of the three candidates. All three candidates, who are aldermen, donated thousands of dollars to their own campaigns. On Thursday, they submitted their quarterly campaign finance reports to the state Board of Elections. Levin, an attorney, spent $43,000. He raised nearly $30,000 from other people and donated $15,000 of his own money to the campaign. Mark Mulliner, who finished third, spent $30,000. He pulled in $13,000 from other people and contributed $20,000 of his own money. Michael Bram, who finished second, spent $12,000. He collected $8,000 from other donors and donated $7,400 of his own money. By early March, the biggest donation to any of the candidates was $5,000 to Mulliner's campaign from Elmhurst Neighbors United, which opposes the planned parking lots at Roberto's Ristorante. Levin questioned the propriety of the donation, noting Mulliner sits on the committee that would review the restaurant's proposal. Mulliner returned the contribution, saying it was unfair for the group to be in the middle of a controversy. Shortly after Mulliner returned the money, Levin received a $5,000 donation from the Downers Grove-based Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Among other donations of note, Levin received $500 from Alderwoman Marti Deuter and $250 from the campaign committee for former Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, who has since become a lobbyist. Levin's campaign spent $13,000 with Addison's Win Marketing, whose chief executive is Pete DiCianni, a DuPage County Board member and a former Elmhurst mayor. Among other contributions, Mulliner received donations of $1,000 and $990 from aldermen Mike Honquest and Noel Talluto, respectively. Bram received $400 from resident Liz Ambrogi, a board member for the local Annie LeGere Foundation. Ambrogi was an advocate for adding advanced life support to Elmhurst fire rigs, an idea Bram supported. Bram also got $300 from Elmhurst Park District board member Kevin Graf and $600 from Edgar Pal, a watchdog over Elmhurst city government.
