MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Two members of the Minnesota National Guard were injured when someone fired gunshots upon a security team working a northwest Minneapolis neighborhood as part of law enforcement's safety plan during the Derek Chauvin murder trial. Shots were fired at the security team that included National Guard members and Minneapolis police officers at 4:19 a.m., the Minnesota National Guard confirmed on Twitter later Sunday morning. The gunfire came from a light-colored SUV that drove past the often busy intersection of West Broadway Avenue and Penn Avenue North, according to the National Guard's statement. Both of the wounded Guard members suffered minor injuries, one of whom was hospitalized from shattered glass. The other sustained "only superficial injuries," the statement said. The shooting comes amid the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, charged with murder in the Memorial Day 2020 death of George Floyd. Closing arguments in the trial are expected to come Monday, when the jury could also deliver its verdict. Minneapolis and its suburbs have also been the sites of protests in recent days after the police shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center. Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, adjutant general of the Minnesota National Guard, said the drive-by shooting "highlights the volatility and tension in our communities right now." This is a developing story.
