BURNSVILLE, MN — A fatal shooting involving police occurred Sunday afternoon in Burnsville, multiple news outlets have reported. The person shot was an armed carjacking suspect who fled from the car and tried to carjack a second person, according to the report from the Star-Tribune. A Burnsville police officer shot the suspect after officers pursuing him were shot at several times, the Burnsville Police Department said in a news release that confirmed the suspect's death. The shooting unfolded at the end of a police pursuit that ended on Highway 13 near the I-35W exit. Burnsville police said officers first encountered the suspect when he crashed a car that had stolen plates, the news release said. The same men then carjacked a woman at gunpoint and began firing at officers, police said. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting and expects to have Highway 13 in Burnsville closed between I-35W and Portland Avenue for hours, KARE and KSTP have reported. Camera footage from the Minnesota Department of Transportation appears to show the suspect get out of the car in a grassy median, cross the highway and point a gun at a motorist. The suspect was pronounced dead after he was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center. He has not been identified. People in the area reported a heavy police presence as they were detoured off Highway 13. Took my kids to the rink to escape for a moment. So I thought. Tim Walz in St. Paul learned of the shooting as they were taking a knee in memory of George Floyd, the Star-Tribune reported. Some protesters had said they were going to go to the site of the police-involved shooting in Burnsville as organizers urged them to go to Brooklyn Center, where Daunte Wright was shot and killed by police a week ago, instead, according to the newspaper. Police officers were not injured, Burnsville police said. This is a developing story. Refresh this page for updates.
