Police Probe 2 Fatal Overnight Shootings In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC — Homicide investigations are underway in Charlotte after two men were shot to death in separate incidents about three hours apart. Late Wednesday evening, shortly before 11:30 p.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers responded to the 4000 block of Wilkinson Boulevard in west Charlotte after someone reported an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male victim who had been shot. The victim, who was identified as Demontravis Davonte Reid, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene by medic, CMPD said. SEE ALSO: Charlotte Police Form New Unit In Response To Gun Crime Surge Hours later, shortly before 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the 8500 block of North Tryon Street near Atrium Health University City hospital after a report of a disturbance. "When officers arrived, they located one male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound," CMPD said. The victim, who was not immediately identified by CMPD, was pronounced dead at the scene. Late last month, CMPD announced that a recent surge in crimes involving firearms in the Charlotte metro has prompted the formation of a new police unit. As of March 24, CMPD reported more than 400 assault with a deadly weapon cases involving guns, which represents about a 31 percent increase over 2020. CMPD said the investigations into both incidents remains active and ongoing, and that anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
