Westchester Vaccine Stock Healthy Despite J&J Pause

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Westchester County has plenty of coronavirus vaccines available for those who want to get them. County Executive George Latimer said Thursday during a news conference that the county stock of vaccines is healthy in spite of the county not administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because of the blood-clot concern. He said that, unfortunately, the J&J vaccine, which was developed to be a one-shot dose, was logistically better for the county to use in instances where getting someone to return for a second dose wasn't practical and giving shots to people who are homebound. Latimer said 44.6 percent of Westchester's population has gotten at least one vaccine dose. The county is now approaching 30 percent of people who have been given the full vaccine series. The Westchester County Center has administered 188,000 vaccines. The two county clinics have given out 40,000 shots, with the Yonkers Armory doing 46,000. Latimer said the number of active cases of the new coronavirus has been dropping. The numbers released Thursday showed 4,565 active cases of the virus. There were 1,200 more a week ago, he said. Hospitalizations have dropped in the last few weeks. Two days ago there were 194 COVID-19-related hospitalizations, down from 279 three weeks ago. The total number of fatalities is now 2,236, Latimer said. There have been 17 deaths over the past week.
